Grad School Competing along the prestigious SKA Professional Kingfish Tour represents the pinnacle of tournament trail competition. Despite the recent addition of the FLW tour and its soon to be launched 'grass roots' series, there is no tougher test of angler and equipment, than the SKA Pro Tour. To earn a berth among the 'best of the best' the anglers first must prove their mettle with a season of qualifying performance along the SKA Mercury Divisional trail. Once achieving this initial objective the team must then be able to commit significant time and resources to fish the 5 stop tour in venues as far distant and unique as Hatteras, Key West and Port Fourchon. Once that commitment has been made the team then needs to be able to navigate new waters, find and secure bait as well as scale tournament quality fish in 7 of the 10 available fishing days accumulating between 235-250 points. Many have tried but few have consistently produced along this trail. We offer the following top secrets used by the FishDancer team to perform at our best along the SKA Professional Kingfish trail; One - Establish a set of objectives for each event and for the season. Without clear goals it is difficult for any team to understand what is working and what is not. DO NOT change these objectives to meet your performance - improve your performance to meet these objectives. Two - Take care of as many details as you can while on land. Logistics, angling techniques, chart reading, GPS preparation, rig twisting and bait gathering techniques can all be honed over the winter and well before any SKA Professional event. Three - Create a network of dependable sources of information. Don't expect anyone to give you GPS numbers of where the fish are but you can expect to exchange general information with those you are willing to share with along the tour. This information can come in a team or individual setting and when in doubt use your own judgment. Three - Fish well. If your team performs both the small and large tasks in a proficient and professional manner, the results will improve. I promise. Onboard the FishDancer I would rather fish well, exceeding our own standards for performance, and go fishless than catch a big fish and fish like a Ringling Brothers circus act. There is nothing to learn about your team or the fish with a lucky catch. Four - Learn, learn and then learn some more. There is no team who knows everything about this sport and every team can teach your team something. Until the team builds its own identity and confidence in its own skills, performance will lag behind expectations. Five - Have pre assigned roles for each member of the team. "THE" FishDancer angles all of our fish and I am the gaffman, regardless. Six - Understand the critical difference in your team's approach in the two fish aggregate format of the SKA Pro Tour vs. the big fish format in divisional competition. This was one of the most difficult things for us to learn....one good fish is a poor performance along the SKA Professional Tour. The team must seek two decent fish during each event. Seven - Maintain your team's honesty and integrity. Fishing along the SKA Pro Tour carries with it a responsibility to the association, the sport and your team. Being known as rule breaker or other social mal content will not win you any events and could scare off potential partners or sponsors. You will reap what you sow.
With this said we have never had as much fun and adventure as we have had over the past three seasons along the SKA Professional Kingfish Tour. To all SKA Mercury Divisional qualifiers, you should join the show......its a real hoot.
